The objective
TO DESIGN AND BUILD A SUSTAINABLE TINY HOUSE FREE FROM LAND OWNERSHIP TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SELF-RELIANCE AND COMFORT MAXIMIZING THE USE OF AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY
Crowdfunding Temporary Example Above
It has become increasingly challenging for my generation and those that are following to obtain and maintain, what for a previous few generations, was relatively easily available. The results of our socioeconomic system in the west is providing evidence of a deeply dissatisfied, neurotic and enslaved society ready for a significant change in the order of things. We are too becoming acutely aware of the detrimental impact of those prescribed aspirations on both ourselves and our environment. It is not sustainable and we seek change.
At the heart of this crisis is the democratized slavery through the debt concept. Young people today have lost access to previously available life supporting social infrastructure becoming more indebted at an earlier time in their lives. We are starting to question the validity of the accepted rhetoric.
Following the 2008 financial crisis in the US, where the inevitable realities of this system are most exaggerated, a movement has emerged that challenges the story we've been fed. How much do we really need to be happy? Is a simpler life with more free time better? What work would we engage in when the pressure to earn has been reduced or eliminated? How can we reduce our impact on the environment?
Many have chosen to build and live in a Tiny House... on wheels. For years now, I have been following the progress of this movement. I am astonished by the ingenuity being presented through these projects. I am most inspired by the shift in perception that is taking place. On the most part, this movement has arisen out of necessity, housing a young middle class unable to secure the same assets their parents were able to. I think it is presenting something almost revolutionary. It's proving material wealth as it operates today is the source of great dissatisfaction, for both the haves and the have-nots. An existential question is being raised.
With a 15 year working background in Architecture & Design, I will endevour to design and build a prototype Tiny House that not only provides freedom, but utilizes the best of technology today. I imagine a self sustaining, low impact house of great comfort that can be replicated and constructed en-masse for those that wish to make this shift. I invite experienced specialists in the areas of design and construction to work with me to take this movement further, in time also to provide the developing world with an example of an alternative aspiration.

Researching Materials & Technology
Construction Materials - Custom Trailer Base
Working with a reputable manufacturer, we intend to customize a base design fit for purpose. During the design process, we will work out all weight requirements being sure to adhere to road regulations for transport of Tiny House between long term resting areas.
Construction Materials - cladding
Recycled reconstituted plastic decking lightweight for vertical application. We intend here follow source from waste products to further reinforce the L.toW objectives of low impact re-purposing of waste generated by the current system. There are a number of manufacturer's available today of these materials, but the most in line with our sustainability principles will be the end supplier.
energy - Solar
The objective will to have all energy needs provided from renewable resources. SunPower has the most efficient systems today over the smallest footprint with longevity guarantees. We are particularly interested in this companies Cradle to Cradle Certification as it follows the aspirations of L.toW objectives for sustainability.
Energy - wind
Low voltage energy by wind turbine for device charging, lighting and low voltage circuits.
Energy - Storage
Tesla's Powerwall is the affordable game-changer in solar energy storage. An extension of the battery technology developed for Tesla's electric cars, this unit would be essential and more than sufficient for the intended energy consumption of this low use off grid tiny house.
Waste Management - Composting Toilet
Many will cringe at the idea of a composting toilet, but we need to acknowledge the damage to the environment that our waste management has created. We may be unaware of the advances in technology in this area to completely eliminate odours whilst too speeding up the decomposition process. A small fan assisted with a 12V current and correct compartmentalization of the waste now generates nutrient rich compost that is clean and safe to dispose of. Although today, the designs remain utilitarian & wanting, here may be an opportunity for an offshoot project - industrial designers take note.
